Ashwiny Iyer Tiwary has a knack for making male-dominated fields her own. Be it advertising or filmmaking, she has been a torchbearer with her continued success. It wasn’t just success that made her stand out, it was also the subjects and issues she dealt with in her films that made her someone to watch out for in the 21st century. Born October 15, 1979, in Mumbai, Tiwari graduated from Sophia Polytechnic with a gold medal in commercial arts. She began her career in advertising. In the 15 years she worked in Leo Burnett India, she won various awards for advertising like the Cannes Lions, New York Festivals Advertising Awards, etc., for her human psychology-oriented approach to advertising. She finally called it quits to pursue filmmaking. Tiwary began her stint as a director with the short film ‘What’s for Breakfast’ in 2012. In 2015, she made her feature film debut with ‘Nil Battey Sannata’. This movie was remade in Tamil with the name ‘Amma Kanakku’ in 2016. Both the Hindi and Tamil versions were critically acclaimed. Her film ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ that came out in 2017 was a success both critically and commercially. Femina magazine selected her as one of the ‘Powerful Women in 2016.’ She won the Filmfare Award for Best Director in 2018 for ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’. Tiwary made her debut as a fiction writer with ‘Mapping Love’ in 2021.
